It seems one of the biggest expenses for families is groceries.  Each month Americans spend hundreds of dollars on groceries.  Some have a budget while others may not know exact numbers.  There are many ways you can save money on your grocery bill each month.

One place to save money is right at the source: the store.  Here are a few tips to keep in mind the next time you find yourself heading to the store:

1. Make a List-And STICK to it!  Making a list gives you a better idea of what exactly you need in order to make meals for the week.  Browse your home, the sales ads, and decide what you need.  Write it down and stick to it.  Extra items thrown into the cart here and there can add up quickly.

2.Shop Alone-Sometimes you may not be the culprit throwing those extra items in the cart.  It could quite possible your children or even your husband.  You’ll be more focused on what you’re purchasing and know what’s in your cart.

3. Shop Around-The whole point of grocery stores sending out weekly ads is to get you in the door.  Many times you’ll notice what is called ‘loss leaders’ on the front page.  These are the biggest sale items to get people to come into the store.  Don’t go to just one store because a few items are on sale then buy a bunch more items that are not on sale and are most likely on sale.

4. Stockpile-This goes along with shopping around.  When you find items at their lowest sale price, stock up if your budget allows.  Then when you need salad dressing you’re not paying $3 per bottle-you might have gotten it free or under $1.  It doesn’t take long to build a stockpile-you’ll be amazed at how quickly buying a few more items here and there will add up.

5. Keep a Running Total-While you’re shopping, pay attention to what is in your cart and keep a running total.  This will prepare you for checkout and you’ll already have an idea of what your groceries will cost.  It also helps you identify any errors so you can check your receipt if the amount seems to be off.

6. Set Target Prices-It’s a good idea to keep a list of prices you’re willing to pay for various items.  Know what’s the most amount of money you’re willing to pay for common items you use.  That will be your stock up price.

These are all small steps that are pretty easy to do.  Notice using coupons wasn’t mentioned.  Coupons aren’t for everyone, however coupons can save you a boat load of money!  If you don’t already use coupons, think about starting.  You’ll be amazed at how much you can save on everyday items!

TELL ALL-How do you save money at the store?  Do you keep a list-and do you stick to it?!
