There’s always a question of whether buying in bulk really saves you more money or not.

In my opinion if you’re shopping the sales and using at coupons at the grocery store, you’re going to save the most because you can get so many items for next to nothing. However, Sam’s does have some great deals and could save a large family a lot in one year.

Even though we’re a family of 2, I find some great deals at Costco. First of all, let me start out by saying I cook a lot and I cook from scratch. I don’t buy things like pre-seasoned items, boxed/manufactured products, in other words I stick only to the outside of the grocery store. So from Costco, I buy all my spices there – huge containers of garlic powder, salt, peppercorn for around $4 – 6. Think of the normal garlic powder container which is small like a salt shaker and it’s usually around $3 (no sale or coupon). Costco sells 18oz. garlic powder for around $4! Although there are some spice coupons that come out, I can’t beat the prices at Costco. Also, vanilla is really cheap if you’re a baker (16 oz. for around $8). In addition, I get bulk grains and the prices are better than Sunflower – quinoa and rice especially. In addition, I get balsamic vinegar, spinach (can get same price at grocery store if on sale, but we consume a lot of spinach, so I don’t always wait for the sale), extra virgin olive oil (4 liters for $25). Because I cook a lot, I go through these items very quickly and frequent trips to the grocery to get small things of extra-virgin olive oil are just not ideal. Check out their prices on cheese, too!
And this is just the food items – Costco has killer deals on TV/entertainment stuff. I’m always finding odds and ends there – last trip I got a huge kitchen mat (thick, soft, and 4 ‘ x 3′) for $9. I came home and searched the internet and couldn’t find anything close to that.
I think I ranted enough…if Sam’s Club doesn’t work out for you…try Costco…I have a membership and am happy to share

Thanks for the feedback. I really need to go in and try Costco. Have you compared their prices for spices to Whole Foods or Sunflower where you can get the desired amount? The olive oil and vanilla would definately be worth it for me! Thanks again!

I get my 10 month old’s diapers and formula (as well as other things) from Costco. I spend only $20-30 a month for formula when most people are spending $100 or more. Also I only spend $40/month on diapers. And the Costco brand is sooooo much better than Pampers or Huggies.
