Summer Round-Up: Plenty To Do In Denver!

by Danielle on May 24, 2010

School is out!  The kids are eager to have fun, be kids, and do various activities.  You could keep the kids busy all summer(although the best summers were always when my brothers and I had plenty of free time to explore and be kids!) and not break the budget.  I’ve rounded up some of the free or inexpensive summer activities for the Denver area.  Please feel free to add to this list if you know of other great events!

Apple Retail Stores-Compose a song, produce a movie, edit photos, or make a presentation.  Apple is offering some great free workshops for familiesSee which workshops your store has to offer.  Hurry, some of the workshops begin as early as Wednesday, May 26th!  Thanks, Bargain Blessings!

REI’s Passport to Adventures-Kids document their adventures(hikes, biking, etc) in their adventure journal then can check out this interactive map for great hikes and bike rides.  When the kids complete an outdoor activity and send in this form, they’ll receive a prize.

AMF Bowling-Kids Bowl Free All Summer!  AMF Bowling Centers are offering 2 free games when you register your child at your local bowling alley(note, you must go to the same bowling alley each time).  You also have the option to purchase a Family Pass(the Family Pass costs $24.95 but allows up to 4 adults to bowl 2 free games everyday).  There are several locations in the Denver area.  You can find more program details here.  Perfect for rainy days or parties!

If movies are a family favorite, check out the Harkins Theater in Northfield Stapleton’s Summer Movie Fun program.  You’ll receive a package of 10 movie tickets for only $5(that’s $.50 per movie!).  10 weeks of summer movie fun!

Local Cinemark Theaters are also offering Summer movie fun!  You can purchase tickets for $1 at the door, or purchase in advance to get a 10 pack for only $5($.50 per movie).

Barnes & Noble is encouraging kids to read this summer with their Summer Reading program.  Kids will receive a free gift after reading eight books!

And not to be out done, Borders is also rewarding the kids for reading.  The Double Dog Dare program offers a free book after reading 10 booksComplete this form and bring it into your local Borders, Borders Express, or Waldenbooks store to redeem the coupon.  Thanks, Bargain Blessings!

Pottery Barn has a weekly story time on Tuesdays at 11a.m. until 11:30a.m.(be sure to call your local store since the time may vary).  Kids will receive an official Book Club Card on their first visit and a gift after their fifth visit.

The Denver Zoo is offering a discount on their memberships until May 31st.  We are so fortunate to have a great zoo!  What I love about the zoo pass is you don’t feel obligated to spend the entire day there.  Go as often as you like and make it a learning experience for the kids!  Call zoo for more information.  I was sent a brochure, but am not sure whether the code they gave me is universal or specific to me.  There will not be another free zoo day until fall so unfortunately we won’t be able to enjoy it for free until then.

Are you taking advantage of any of these summer activities?

Thanks for posting the the Borders and Barnes & Noble summer reading info! Together with our local library program, we can get a lot of cool free stuff for our kids! (And have plenty of incentive to read!!)

Thanks for posting all the info in one place–I’ve been planning to take advantage of a lot of these activities and to have all of the links in one post will save me so much time! My family and I are looking forward to a super fun summer!

AMC theatres usually offers $1 movies on Wednesday with $3 kids snack packs. The info is not on their website yet but I am hoping it is coming soon! http://www.amcentertainment.com/smc/

Do you have to pay for renting bowling shoes with the kids free bowling, or is that included? If so, do you know how much rentals cost? I have 4 kiddos, so that might add up quickly!

We are doing the kidsbowlfree.com promo this summer-we just went for the first time yesterday! It was a blast-the first time our three girls ever bowled and they enjoyed it!

Melissa-you were asking about the shoes-yes, you do have to rent shoes each time (I believe it’s $4/time) so not exactly a great deal when you consider that. We hunted (and I mean scoured) local thrift stores and came up with 3 pairs of shoes (2 adults and 1 child’s size 10). We ended up buying our older girls shoes from here: shoeline.com (dexter was the brand) for $25 each.

You also have to buy an “family pass” to allow for the parents to bowl. It was $26 and included my husband and I. Total we spent about $100 (for the us to bowl “free” all summer) but we figure that it’s worth it-especially if we can re sell the shoes that they grow out of next summer!

Good luck!
