Saving Money on “Real” Food & Organics

by erica on September 13, 2011

Here’s a good way to start! On Living Social you can get a $20 Whole Foods Store Gift Card for $10- You are starting at 50% off without coupons! Get Whole Foods Market locations and hours here. If you want this deal I would grab it now since they tend to go fast- limit one per person. Sorry- it’s gone now:(

Help-All the coupons I see are for junk food! I don’t want my family to eat prepackaged foods so couponing isn’t worth it.

A few thoughts. Yes, there are a lot of coupons for prepackaged foods. Most of the time you will save money by making those items yourself rather than buying ready made, if you have the time. Even if you are on a strictly organic or whole foods diet you still need some things coupons can help with.  Salad dressings? Crackers? Meat & Dairy? You can get all of things really inexpensively with coupons and put the money you saved towards your produce.  Also, putting your efforts into using coupons for your health, beauty and household supplies will give you a lot of savings in the least amount of time.

Safeway & Kroger have both have coupon books in the produce department from time to time. Fresh Express & Dole bagged salad coupons are plentiful and you can get them free or very close. With coupons it’s cheaper to buy this convenience item than it is to buy lettuce heads and cut them yourself.

Kroger has Driscoll’s berries on sale quite often for $1-$2.  Sign up for Driscoll’s newsletter here and get coupons by email.  We have been able to get dozens of berries for free this year and I flash freeze them when we have extra.
Earthbound Farms has printable coupons when you complete a quiz. This will probably get you free lettuce, celery or carrots.
There is a $.55 MQ for melon out right now-$0.55/1 Dulcinea Melon 7/24/2011 RP Insert (exp 11/5/2011)
Cascadian Farms has a $1 off printable- I recently found frozen vegetables for $1.67 at Kroger or just $.67 each after coupon
Kellogg’s has Moringstar Farms and Kashi coupons.
Kashi coupons are plentiful at Coupons.com, CouponNetwork and RecycleBank. RecycleBank requires you to sign up and earn points in order to get some better value organic coupons and store coupons.  There is also a $5/$50 at Albertson’s.  MamboSprouts has great coupons too including a $.50/1 Luna bar which makes them free with doubles.
Fresh Gourmet croutons at Safeway oftern have peelie stickers on them for $1/2 making them $.50 each when they are on sale.
Boulder Canyon chips are often $.50 or less with coupons at Kroger.
Safeway has YoBaby yogurt and Horizon milk marked down quite often in the dairy markdown area- look for red stickers and stack with your manufacturer coupons
If you prefer almond or coconut milk it can be found for less than regular milk with a coupon.
You will see when I post the shopping lists for Sprouts and Sunflower that I list bulk items for you.  Sometimes the prices for buying bulk are much than you can do with coupons on prepackaged items.  Typically oatmeal, trail mix, dried fruit, beans and granola are good bets. Another strategy for shopping Sprouts and Sunflower is to shop on Wednesdays so you can get sale prices for both weeks on the same visit.
